Content migration

We support organisations through large-scale content migration projects, helping teams redesign, restructure and improve content as part of moving to new digital platforms.

At Cornerstone Content Limited, we believe content migration is more than simply moving pages from one system to another. It is an opportunity to improve accessibility, simplify user journeys and create more sustainable ways of managing content. We have led and redesigned large volumes of content across multiple local government organisations, working collaboratively with services, stakeholders and internal content teams throughout the migration process.

Our migration approach

Every migration project we support includes a structured content design process focused on improving both the content and the way teams manage it. This typically includes:

  • conducting a detailed content audit of existing content

  • identifying accessibility issues and areas for improvement

  • establishing clear content ownership across services

  • creating a new information architecture for service areas

  • analysing Google Analytics, heat maps and user feedback

  • running service engagement and kickoff sessions

  • carrying out collaborative content reviews and pair writing

  • mentoring content teams on Drupal publishing and stakeholder engagement

  • drafting and redesigning content for Drupal merging and restructuring content

  • converting documents into accessible web content

Our approach ensures content is not only migrated, but improved, simplified and made easier for users to access and understand.

LocalGov Drupal migration experience

We have delivered content design services for multiple LocalGov Drupal migration projects, supporting councils to meet strict delivery deadlines while improving the quality and usability of their content.

We have migrated content for:

  • Cumberland Council

  • Croydon Council

  • Luton Borough Council

  • Westmorland and Furness Council

  • Dumfries and Galloway Council

This work has included complex service areas such as:

Microsites and subsites

We have also supported the creation and migration of microsites and subsites within LocalGov Drupal. Most recently, we worked with Dumfries and Galloway Council to deliver several microsites to a tight deadline, collaborating closely with service teams to migrate content from the GOSS platform into accessible, user-centred Drupal content.

This included:

  • restructuring content for the new platform

  • improving accessibility and readability

  • redesigning page structures and navigation

  • supporting stakeholders through the migration process

  • ensuring consistency across microsites and service areas

Collaborative migration process

Our migration process begins with a detailed content audit, followed by regular collaborative sessions with stakeholders and services. These sessions help ensure drafted content reflects both service requirements and user needs, while also creating shared ownership of the migration process. We believe migration projects are most successful when content teams and stakeholders are involved throughout the work, rather than reviewing content only at the end.

Intranet migration experience

We have also supported intranet migration work for Cumberland Council, helping to deliver a public intranet on the Drupal platform. This project involved migrating four legacy SharePoint systems into a single intranet experience.

The work included:

  • auditing and restructuring legacy content

  • simplifying navigation and information architecture

  • working with developers to create new functionality for restricted content

  • supporting stakeholders through the migration process

  • improving consistency and usability across the platform

Working collaboratively with developers

Throughout several migration projects, we have also worked closely with developers to adapt and improve Drupal content types in ways that enhance the overall user experience. This collaborative approach helps ensure content structures support:

  • better usability

  • clearer navigation

  • improved accessibility

  • more sustainable content management

  • flexible publishing across services

Building sustainable content services

Alongside delivering migration projects, we also focus on strengthening internal content capability by mentoring content teams throughout the process. By supporting teams with publishing workflows, stakeholder engagement and Drupal content management, we help organisations build confidence and create sustainable approaches to managing content long after migration projects are complete.
